What hardscaping is

The bones of a backyard that actually lasts

Hardscaping is every built, non-living part of your yard — the patios, walls, driveways, walkways, fire pits and outdoor kitchens that give a property its shape, its flow, and its usable square footage. Softscaping brings the green; hardscaping is the structure everything else is built around.

In Winnipeg, it’s a different job than it is almost anywhere else. Our frost line runs close to 1.8 metres down and we’re sitting on expansive Red River clay — gumbo — that swells when it’s wet, shrinks when it’s dry, and heaves hard every freeze-thaw. Build for that, and a paver patio can outlast the mortgage. Ignore it, and even premium stone is cracked and lifting by the third spring. That’s the whole difference, and it’s mostly underground.

BerryHill designs and builds the full range of hardscape features in-house — from a single flagstone walkway to a complete outdoor living room — with the base prep, grading and drainage that our climate demands baked into every quote.

Seven ways we build in stone

Every one is engineered for Winnipeg frost and clay, and every one connects into the others — most of our best projects combine a few. Tap through for details, materials and project ideas.

Paver Patio Installation

The centrepiece upgrade. Interlocking pavers and natural stone patios set on a deep compacted base — flexible surfaces that ride out freeze-thaw and stay dead level for decades.

Retaining Walls

Structural and decorative walls that tame slopes, stop erosion, create tiered garden space and hold grade transitions — engineered with proper drainage behind them for Manitoba conditions.

Driveway Installation

Paver driveways that carry real weight without the wandering cracks of poured concrete. Built on a heavy-duty base with edge restraint, and repairable one stone at a time.

The part nobody quotes on

Built below the frost line, every time

Anyone can lay a paver. Whether it’s still level in fifteen winters comes down to what happened before the first stone went down — and that’s exactly where cut-rate crews save money and cost you yours.

  • 01Deep excavation & a properly compacted granular base. Sized for our frost depth and our clay — not a mild-climate spec copied off the internet.
  • 02Grading & drainage designed in. Water sent away from the house and the surface, so meltwater never pools, refreezes, or heaves your build.
  • 03Edge restraint & polymeric jointing. The interlock that lets a paver surface flex with the ground as one system instead of cracking like a slab.
  • 04Manitoba-made, freeze-rated materials. Barkman, Belgard and Techo-Bloc units engineered for our winters — roughly three times the strength of standard poured concrete.

Spend your money below the surface where it counts. It’s the one part of a patio you can’t see and can’t fix cheaply later — so we don’t cut it, ever.

Good questions

Hardscaping in Winnipeg, answered

What’s included in hardscaping services?
Hardscaping covers the built, non-living features of a yard: paver patios, retaining walls, driveways, walkways, steps, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and water features. Softscaping — the living side, like sod and planting — is handled by our softscaping team.
Why does hardscaping cost more in Winnipeg?
Because most online prices come from milder climates. Our frost line runs close to 1.8 metres and our clay soil moves with every freeze-thaw, so the excavation, compacted base and drainage that make a project survive are real work with real cost. That base prep is the difference between a patio that lasts decades and one that heaves by the third spring — it isn’t an upsell, it’s the job.
Are pavers really better than concrete for our climate?
For most Winnipeg yards, yes. A paver surface is an interlocking system that flexes with ground movement instead of cracking like a rigid slab, and if a section ever settles you lift and reset those pavers invisibly — no scar, no re-pour. Manitoba-made pavers are also engineered for our winters and rated far stronger than standard poured concrete.
Can you combine several features into one project?
Absolutely — and it’s usually the smart move. Planning a patio, wall, fire pit and walkway together spreads the fixed costs (mobilization, equipment, delivery) across a bigger scope, so the cost per square foot drops and everything ties together as one cohesive design. Many of our best projects are complete outdoor living spaces built in a single phase.
What most affects how long a hardscape lasts?
The base and drainage, hands down. Our four-to-six-foot frost depth and clay soil demand proper excavation, a deep compacted base and water managed away from the surface. Get that right and premium materials last decades; skip it and even the best pavers will heave and settle. It’s the part you can’t see — which is exactly why it’s the part we never cut.
