Most quotes in this city are priced on what you can see: square footage, paver choice, plant list. The part that decides whether your patio is still level in ten years is the part nobody photographs.
01Manitoba clay never sits still
Winnipeg sits on heavy clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries. Over a season the ground under your yard genuinely moves — which is why patios laid on a thin sand bed start dipping within three or four years, and why walls built without drainage lean toward the yard. Our answer is depth and separation: 8 to 12 inches of excavation, geotextile between soil and base, and 6 to 10 inches of granular base compacted in lifts — not dumped and rolled once.
02Frost heave is the actual enemy
Manitoba's frost line runs roughly four feet deep. Water in the soil freezes, expands, and lifts whatever sits on top of it — then thaws and drops, never evenly. That cycle is what cracks poured concrete and tilts deck posts. It's also the argument for pavers over a slab: individual pavers flex with ground movement and settle back. A slab just cracks, and a crack is a replacement, not a repair.
03On a flat prairie lot, water has nowhere to go
Winnipeg is flat, clay doesn't drain, and every spring the entire snowpack melts at once. If your lot isn't graded to move that water away from the house, it pools — against your foundation, in the low corner, under the new patio somebody just built on top of the problem. Regrading runs $500–$5,000, full-lot around $2,500–$5,000. Compare that to water in a basement.
04The season is short and it books out fast
Real work starts when the ground thaws — mid-April to May — and runs to freeze-up in October. That's a compressed window for an entire city, and good crews fill their calendars in February and March. The homeowners who get their preferred build dates book quotes over winter.

The invisible 60% of the job. Excavate to depth, lay geotextile, compact granular base in lifts, set grade away from the house. This is the step that decides whether your project is still level in a decade.
Build
Our own crews — no subcontractors on any part of the job, except licensed gas fitting where the law requires it. Site swept at the end of every day. We finish your project before starting the next one.
Final walkthrough & follow-up
We walk it with you and we don't leave until you sign off. If something settles or shifts afterward, you call us and we come back.

Yes, and it's one of the most common jobs we're called for. Solutions include regrading, swales, French drains and dry wells. Regrading typically runs $500 to $5,000, with full-lot regrading around $2,500 to $5,000. Grading combined with a drainage system runs $4,000 to $10,000+.
Is artificial turf worth it in Winnipeg?
It depends on the space. For shaded yards, dog runs and putting greens where real grass keeps failing, it's often the right call at $15 to $25 per square foot installed. For big open lawns, good sod and a sprinkler system is usually the smarter spend.
Do you subcontract any of your work?
No. Every crew on your property is a BerryHill crew — patios, walls, decks, grading, planting, all of it. The only exception is licensed gas fitting for outdoor kitchen gas lines, which legally requires a licensed trade.
How long does a landscaping project take?
A sod installation or small patio is usually a few days. A mid-size paver patio runs about one to two weeks. A full backyard build with grading, hardscape, planting and lighting typically takes three to six weeks. We finish your project before starting the next one, so the timeline we quote is the timeline you get.
