What softscaping is

Everything in the yard that’s alive

If hardscaping is the bones of a yard, softscaping is the living tissue — the sod, trees, shrubs, perennials and garden beds that bring colour, softness and seasonal change. It’s the part that makes a hardscaped yard feel finished instead of paved.

And in Winnipeg, it’s not as simple as dropping plants in the ground. We garden in Zone 3: short summers, long deep-freeze winters, and heavy clay that drowns roots if you don’t amend and grade it right. The difference between a lawn that thrives and one that struggles is almost always what happened below it — the soil prep, the grading, the right plant chosen for our climate in the first place.

BerryHill handles the whole living side of your landscape in-house, from a fresh roll of sod to a mature tree and a full planting plan — always starting with the soil, because that’s where a lawn is won or lost.

It starts with the soil

A green lawn is grown from the ground up

Anyone can roll out sod. Whether it’s still lush next August comes down to what’s underneath it — and that’s the step the cheap crews skip.

  • 01Screened, quality topsoil. Enough real growing medium for roots to establish — not a thin skin over compacted builder’s fill.
  • 02Grading that sheds water. Sloped away from the house so roots don’t drown in our clay and low spots don’t turn to swamp.
  • 03Right plant, right place, right time. Zone 3-hardy species, planted in the season that lets them root before freeze-up.
  • 04A plan to keep it alive. Honest watering and care guidance so the lawn and plantings we install actually make it through year one.

The prettiest sod in the world fails on bad soil. So we spend the effort where you’ll never see it — down in the root zone, where a lawn is actually won.

Good questions

Softscaping in Winnipeg, answered

What’s the difference between softscaping and hardscaping?
Softscaping is the living side of a landscape — sod, trees, shrubs and perennials, and garden beds. Hardscaping is the built, non-living side — patios, walls and walkways. The best yards combine both, and we handle each in-house.
Should I choose sod or artificial turf?
It depends on the spot. Real sod is the right call for most open lawns and costs far less up front. Artificial turf wins for dog runs, deep-shade dead zones and small yards where mowing is a hassle — provided the base is built for our frost and clay. We’ll walk your yard and tell you honestly which is which.
When’s the best time to plant trees and shrubs here?
Fall has a slight edge — cooler air and still-warm soil let roots establish before winter, giving plants a head start on spring. Spring is a strong second. Peak-summer planting works too, but needs diligent watering to get roots going while the sun’s trying to cook them.
Why does my new sod keep drying out in patches?
Almost always the soil underneath. Sod laid on thin or compacted builder’s fill can’t root evenly, so it dries and thins in spots. A proper base of screened topsoil, correctly graded, is what lets a lawn root in uniformly — which is why we never skip the prep.
Do you handle seasonal cleanups and lawn maintenance?
Yes — spring and fall cleanups, aeration and overseeding to keep a lawn healthy through our freeze-thaw swings. Fall aeration and overseeding in particular set the lawn up to come out of winter thick and green.
