Winnipeg Grading, Drainage & Systems

Send the water where it belongs

Standing water, a soggy lawn, moisture creeping toward the foundation — most of it comes down to grade. We fix the slope first, add the right drainage, and set up the systems that keep a yard working.

What this hub covers

The invisible work everything else sits on

This is the unglamorous, underground half of a landscape — the grading, drainage, irrigation and lighting that nobody photographs but everything depends on. Get it right and your patio stays level, your basement stays dry and your lawn stays green. Get it wrong and it’s the reason the pretty stuff fails.

Winnipeg makes it matter more than most places. We sit in the Red River Valley on heavy clay that drains about as fast as a parking lot, and every spring five months of snow melts across the whole city in a couple of weeks. A yard that shrugs off a summer sprinkle can completely fail under snowmelt — and in clay, saturated soil against a foundation is what pushes water into basements.

BerryHill reads your actual grade, finds where the water really goes, and fixes it at the source — then adds the irrigation and lighting that make the finished yard work day and night.

Grade first, everything second

Fix the slope before you build anything pretty

Before anyone sells you a fancy pipe system, the first question is always the same: which way does your yard slope? Nine times out of ten, the root problem is grade.

  • 01We read the grade first. Water goes where the ground tips it. A common target is about six inches of fall over the first ten feet from the house.
  • 02The right tool for your lot. French drain, catch basin, swale, dry well or just extended downspouts — matched to how your yard actually floods.
  • 03Surface and groundwater both. They’re two different animals; a proper plan handles both, not just the puddle you can see.
  • 04Depth and materials that last. Drains taken below the frost line, wrapped in fabric, with the right gravel — so they don’t silt up and quit in two seasons.

Grading is invisible the day it’s done — nobody photographs a slope. That’s exactly why it’s the most-skipped job in landscaping, right up until it’s the reason a patio heaved or a basement leaked. We do it first, and we do it right.

Good questions

Drainage & grading in Winnipeg, answered

Why does my yard flood every spring but seem fine in summer?
Spring snowmelt dumps a huge volume of water across your whole property in a short window — far more than a summer rain. A yard graded to handle normal rain can still fail under melt. It’s usually a grading problem that only shows itself when the water volume spikes.
Is standing water actually bad for my house?
It can be. In Winnipeg’s clay, saturated soil against the foundation creates pressure that pushes moisture through cracks and joints. Beyond the house, standing water drowns grass, breeds mosquitoes and softens the ground under patios and walkways.
Do I need a French drain or just better grading?
Often just grading — it’s the first thing to check and the most common real fix. French drains come in when the surface grade is correct but the clay can’t move the water fast enough, or when you’re protecting a foundation from groundwater. A proper on-site assessment tells you which.
When can drainage work be done?
Any time the ground is thawed — spring through fall. Spring, right after you’ve seen exactly where the snowmelt pooled, is often ideal: that’s priceless information about where the water actually wants to go.
Should I install irrigation and lighting at the same time?
If you’re already opening up the yard for grading or a build, yes — running irrigation and lighting lines while the ground is open is far cheaper than trenching a finished yard later. Planning them together saves money and mess.
