Why we built these

Most online cost calculators are built for a national average, which in practice means they're built for somewhere warmer than here. They assume four inches of base under a patio. They don't know our frost line runs 1.8 metres deep, that our clay swells and shrinks with the seasons, or that the City charges $151 plus a $43 admin fee for a driveway approach permit.

These do. Every rate started from published Winnipeg 2026 pricing and got checked against what jobs actually cost here. More usefully, each one splits the estimate into what you can see and what you can't — surface, base and excavation, then everything else. On most hardscaping projects a third or more of your money goes underground, and that split is the single most useful thing to understand before you compare two quotes.

How to use them well

Every calculator gives you a planning range, not a quote. That's deliberate. A single number to the dollar would be false precision — real pricing moves with soil condition, buried services, machine access and how much correction your grade needs before work starts.

Use them to size up a project, sanity-check a quote you've already got, and work out which parts to cut if the total comes back higher than you hoped. Then get a real number from someone who has walked your yard.

Doing more than one project?

Start with the whole-yard calculator above rather than adding up individual tools. Projects done together cost meaningfully less than the same projects done separately — one mobilization, one machine rental, one delivery round instead of three. And sequencing matters: grading and drainage first, then hardscape and structures, then buried services like irrigation and lighting cable, then planting, then sod last. Work done out of order usually means undoing something.

Ready for a real number?

A calculator gives you a range. We'll walk your yard, look at the grade and the access, and give you a firm price — with base depth stated in writing.
