Samuel Jacob Jackson acquired the land in 1875, founded the town in 1878, and financed the first lime kilns in the late 1870s after recognising what was under the ground. The rail line reached Stonewall in 1881; it became a village in 1906 and a town in 1908. Both the 1912 town hall and the 1914 post office were built from local limestone, and they are still standing.
Stonewall is its own incorporated Town, entirely surrounded by the RM of Rockwood, which has its office in town. The 2021 census put it at 5,046, up 4.9 percent — steady growth rather than explosive, though a substantial development was announced for the town’s eastern edge in early 2026.
Why the ground itself changes the job in Stonewall
This is the one community on our list that is not sitting on Red River clay, and everything follows from that:
Bedrock is shallow, and excavation depth is a live variable. Stonewall sits on the boundary of Ordovician and Silurian limestone and dolomite — the Stonewall Formation — and glacial meltwater stripped away much of the softer surface material. Water reaches the aquifer fast, so runoff practice matters. The Interlake is a major fresh-water recharge area to the carbonate aquifer, with solution conduits producing substantial spring flows. Surface water gets down there quickly with little natural filtering. That makes fertiliser, de-icer and runoff choices a genuine responsibility here rather than a box-ticking exercise.
The water is extremely hard. Stonewall’s treated municipal water runs about 572 mg/L — roughly 34 grains per gallon — drawn from three limestone-aquifer wells. That is the treated figure. It affects irrigation spotting on stone and glass, and it is worth designing around rather than discovering.
But the material is local, and it looks right here. Quarrying ran commercially from around 1880 to 1967 and is still an active industry in the area.
