St. François Xavier was founded around 1824 as Grantown by Métis leader Cuthbert Grant, following the Battle of Seven Oaks in 1816, making it the second oldest settlement in Manitoba. The surrounding land was historically known as La Prairie du Cheval Blanc — the White Horse Plains — and the settlement grew into an important Métis parish along the Assiniboine River. The Grey Nuns arrived in 1850 to serve the community, and by 1891 the local subdistrict had grown to 1,105 residents. Their convent, first built around 1892 and rebuilt in 1916 after a fire, still stands today as a municipally designated heritage site.

St. François Xavier sits roughly 15 km west of Winnipeg along the Assiniboine River and the Trans-Canada Highway, and has grown quickly in recent years: the 2021 census recorded 845 residents, up 27.6% from 662 in 2016. The White Horse Monument, a statue erected beside the Trans-Canada Highway in 1966, commemorates the community’s founding legend. Properties here range from historic in-community lots to riverside acreages backing onto the Assiniboine, a mix that shapes almost every landscaping job in the area.

Why St. François Xavier is a different job

Riverside grade and a long-established community change what a landscaping project needs:

Riverside acreage lots along the Assiniboine. Many St. François Xavier properties sit on riverside acreages along the Assiniboine River, with long driveways, mature treed lots and grade changes down toward the riverbank that a standard city lot doesn’t have.

One of Manitoba’s oldest communities, with the character to match. Founded around 1824 as Grantown by Métis leader Cuthbert Grant, St. François Xavier is the second oldest settlement in Manitoba, and many properties sit on long-established, mature lots rather than fresh subdivisions.

Fast growth on a historic footprint. The population grew 27.6% between the 2016 and 2021 census, from 662 to 845, meaning newer builds are going in alongside century-old riverside lots.

Riverbank grade and drainage need real planning. Properties backing onto the Assiniboine River need drainage and grading that account for riverbank slope, not a flat-lot template.
