Serving Landmark, Manitoba

Landscaping in Landmark, Manitoba

BerryHill Landscaping & Construction builds for one of the Rural Municipality of Taché’s original Mennonite farm towns — an established community on rich black soil, growing steadily rather than exploding into subdivisions the way its neighbour Niverville has. Driveways, patios, retaining walls, sod, drainage and full yard builds, in-house from design to finished grade. For a free on-site consultation and quote, call 204-801-7669.

Landmark was first homesteaded around 1907 under the name Prairie Rose, but the community that exists today took shape after the First World War, when Mennonite families from the nearby East Reserve began buying land here — by 1920, about a dozen families had settled and started farming. Local resident Peter M. Penner picked the name “Landmark” from a list in the Farmer’s Advocate that same year. The 1950s brought the businesses that still anchor the town: Landmark Motors in 1950, the Landmark General Store in 1951, and Landmark Feeds Inc. in 1954, followed by Landmark Collegiate Institute in 1961. Landmark sits in the Rural Municipality of Taché, alongside Lorette to the north — not the RM of Hanover, which lies immediately to the west around neighbouring Niverville.

Landmark today is a compact, established farm town of just over 1,300 people, with two schools and four churches serving a community built on rich black soil that supports dairy, hog, poultry and grain operations. Its population grew a modest 2.6% between 2016 and 2021 — steady growth on existing streets rather than the rapid subdivision expansion happening a few kilometres away in Niverville. Like Ste. Anne to the east, Landmark relies on the Seine River Diversion to manage spring flooding, but the landscaping work here mostly means grading, replacing and upgrading yards that have been lived on for decades, not laying out brand-new lots.

Why Landmark is a different job than Niverville

Landmark and Niverville sit close together but are not interchangeable jobs:

Established lots, not raw new-build grade. Landmark’s population grew a steady 2.6% between 2016 and 2021 — a fraction of Niverville’s subdivision-driven boom — so most of our work here is regrading, hardscape replacement and yard upgrades on properties that have been settled for years, not builder-grade lots straight off a new street.

Rich black farmland soil, not a fresh subdivision grid. The RM of Taché describes Landmark’s ground as rich black soil that supports dairy, hog, poultry and grain farming — this is deep agricultural country, and we build drainage and grading plans around established yards and mature trees rather than a blank engineered lot.

A century of Mennonite farm-town history, in its own RM. Landmark is part of the Rural Municipality of Taché, not Hanover — a distinct municipal planning and services context from Niverville, even though the two communities are close neighbours along the Dawson Trail corridor.

Real local institutions, not a commuter subdivision. Landmark Feeds, two schools and four churches have anchored this town since the 1950s and 60s, which means a mix of long-settled properties with real landscaping history behind them.

We don’t treat Landmark like Niverville.

Established farm-town lots and rich black soil call for a different plan than a raw new subdivision grid a few kilometres away.

We work around what decades of farming built.

Mature trees, settled grading, real history — we build with it, not over it.

Is Landmark the same market as Niverville?

No. Landmark is part of the Rural Municipality of Taché, along with Lorette to the north — it’s Niverville, just to the west, that sits in the RM of Hanover.

What is Landmark’s soil like?

Landmark is known regionally for rich black agricultural soil that supports dairy, hog, poultry and grain farming; we still assess grading and drainage on every site rather than assuming.
