Métis families were settled here by 1860, when the place was called Petite-Pointe-des-Chênes — little oak point. The first French-Canadian family, the Gauthiers, arrived in 1865, with further migration from Quebec in the 1880s, and Bishop Alexandre-Antonin Taché renamed it Lorette. The Dawson Road brought commerce: the first store opened in 1884, and Notre-Dame-de-Lorette church was completed in 1900 with murals by a Montreal artist and three bells cast in France.
Today Lorette is a Local Urban District within the RM of Taché, and the RM’s designated growth centre — the Development Plan projects roughly 60 percent of the municipality’s growth landing here. The 2021 census put it at 3,512, up 9.5 percent in five years. It is also the most genuinely francophone commuter community within easy reach of Winnipeg.

The utility district boundary is not the LUD boundary. The RM says so directly: the Lorette Utility District boundary is different from the boundary of the LUD of Lorette. In practice that means a fully serviced town lot with piped water and sewer and a well-and-septic rural parcel can be a short walk apart. Before we design anything, we establish which you are, because septic field location constrains where a driveway, patio or tree can go — permanently.
The RM is naturally very poorly drained. That is the Development Plan’s own wording. Slopes are generally under two percent, the western part of the RM where Lorette sits carries some of the most productive but heaviest agricultural soils in the world, and there is an extensive agricultural drainage network doing the work that gravity will not. Your yard has to connect into that system deliberately.
The Seine River has a real flood history here. The Seine runs through the area and has flooded Lorette before — the 1950 flood is documented in community photographs. It overflows in wet springs and drops to very little by late summer, which is hard on anything built on a shallow base near it.
Flowing wells can cause their own problems. The provincial groundwater report for this watershed warns that uncontrolled discharge from flowing wells can contribute to local drainage and foundation problems. On rural parcels that is worth checking before you spend money on grading that a well will simply undo.

It is worth confirming, because in Lorette it is genuinely not obvious.
