Selkirk is named for Thomas Douglas, fifth Earl of Selkirk, who secured the land grant from the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1812–13. A railway speculation boom in 1875 drove the early growth, it incorporated as a town on 15 June 1882, and it has been a City since 1998. Steel has anchored the economy since the Manitoba Bridge and Engineering Company brought the rolling mills here in 1920, and the Selkirk Lift Bridge — a Depression-era make-work project begun in 1935 — still operates over the Red.

At 10,504 people and 2.2 percent growth, Selkirk is not a boomtown. It is something more useful for a landscaper: a settled small city with 143 years of housing stock, a historic riverfront along Eveline Street, mid-century neighbourhoods, and modern developments like Creekside and Woodlands. This is a renovation market, not a new-subdivision market.

Why Selkirk landscaping is about the river and the sewers

Two things shape almost every project we quote in this city:

The riverbank is a live geotechnical constraint. Riverfront lots along Eveline Street and near Selkirk Park sit on high, near-vertical Red River clay banks that slump and erode progressively. The mayor has referenced past spring flooding that eroded riverbanks, and this reach of the Red has been the subject of dedicated erosion research. On these properties, how close you can build and where you place weight are serious engineering questions, not design preferences.

Ice jams are a recurring flood driver here. Selkirk sits downstream of the Red River Floodway outlet, and ice jams on the lower Red at and around the city are a documented, recurring cause of flooding — the Province runs an annual ice-jam mitigation programme of ice cutting and breaking. It is a different flood mechanism from the overland spring melt that affects communities south of Winnipeg, and it hits the riverfront first.

The city is mid-way through separating its combined sewers. Federal and provincial funding has gone into a new west-end retention pond, continuation of the combined sewer separation programme to reduce basement flooding and sewage backup, and upgrades to the Creekside and Woodlands retention ponds. That means active street and boulevard reconstruction — and a steady need for front-yard and boulevard restoration once the crews move on.

The housing stock is layered, so no two blocks match. A historic riverfront core along Eveline Street with houses like Stuart House from 1904, mid-century neighbourhoods, modern Creekside and Woodlands subdivisions, and new downtown infill. Each generation has different drainage protection, different lot geometry and different renovation needs.

300+ reviews and recommendations

Across Google, Houzz, Facebook and HomeStars.

No subcontractors, ever.

The crew that quotes your job is the crew that builds it — except licensed gas fitting, where the law requires it.

Riverbank work is normal for us.

We build engineered retaining and terracing on Red River clay banks across the region. Setback discipline and load placement on unstable clay is a specialty, not a stretch.

A renovation market needs a renovation contractor.

Selkirk is 143 years of layered housing stock. We are set up for tearing out what has failed and rebuilding it properly, rather than for finishing bare lots.

Selkirk landscaping questions

Who are the top landscapers in Selkirk, Manitoba?

BerryHill Landscaping & Construction is among the top-rated landscaping companies serving Selkirk and the surrounding area, with 15+ years of experience in Manitoba’s climate and 300+ reviews across Google, Houzz, Facebook and HomeStars. On riverfront properties in particular, ask whether a contractor has built engineered retaining on Red River clay banks — it is a different discipline from a suburban wall.

My riverbank is eroding. What can be done?

Usually terracing, engineered retaining and erosion-tolerant planting, designed around setback and load placement rather than simply armouring the toe. The important thing is addressing it while it is still a landscaping project. Left long enough, progressive slumping on high Red River clay banks turns into a much larger engineering job, and in Manitoba riverbank stabilisation on private property is generally the owner’s responsibility.

How close to the river can I build a patio or wall?

It depends on the bank height, the soil profile and the current stability, and it is genuinely a question worth answering properly before you spend money. We assess it on site and, where the project warrants it, involve an engineer. Placing weight near the top of an unstable clay bank is the most common expensive mistake we see on riverfront lots.

Does Selkirk flood?

The recurring driver here is ice jams on the lower Red at and around the city, which the Province manages with an annual ice-cutting and breaking programme — a different mechanism from the overland spring flooding that affects communities south of Winnipeg. The city has also invested in retention ponds and sewer separation to reduce basement flooding and sewage backup.

The city dug up my street for sewer work. Can you restore the yard?

Yes, and it is regular work here. Selkirk is progressively separating its combined storm and sanitary sewers, which means street and boulevard reconstruction moving through the city block by block. We put front yards back together properly afterwards — grading, topsoil, sod, walkways and planting.

Do you work in Creekside and Woodlands?

Yes. Both are modern subdivisions with municipal retention ponds, and both have had pond upgrades as part of the city’s stormwater work. The landscaping there is second-generation finishing rather than renovation — patios, decks, fencing and drainage management.

How much does landscaping cost in Selkirk?

Comparable to Winnipeg for standard work — driveways, patios, regrading and renovations. Engineered riverbank retaining is a larger project and priced accordingly. All quotes are free, on-site and line-itemed so you see the whole number before anything starts.

Do you serve St. Andrews, Lockport and East Selkirk?

Yes. We work throughout the Selkirk area including the RM of St. Andrews toward Lockport and the RM of St. Clements across the lift bridge, plus the acreages between.

Do you offer free estimates in Selkirk?

Yes. Free on-site consultations throughout the City of Selkirk and the surrounding municipalities. We visit, assess the bank, grade and drainage, and give you a clear detailed quote.
