Stony Mountain’s first recorded homestead was established by James Isbister in 1870, reached by the Faith Trail that carried settlers north from Winnipeg by Red River cart. The community’s name comes from the limestone and dolostone ridge it sits on — an escarpment deposited as sea-floor sediment roughly 440 million years ago during the Late Ordovician period, left exposed by the retreat of the last ice age. Quarrying of that stone began in 1893, supplying material for the walls of the Stony Mountain Institution, the federal penitentiary that opened February 2, 1877 under first warden Samuel Bedson and was officially opened by Governor General Lord Dufferin that August.

The community sits within the RM of Rockwood, about 11 km north of Winnipeg on Provincial Highway 7, a few kilometres from Stonewall’s downtown quarry district but a distinct place in its own right. It has grown quickly in recent years: the 2021 census recorded 1,979 residents, up 21% from 1,636 in 2016. Two federal correctional institutions — Stony Mountain Institution and Rockwood Institution — sit near the community, but the residential streets around them are ordinary family homes and newer subdivisions on the same limestone ridge geology.
