Landscaping in Riverview, Winnipeg

BerryHill Landscaping & Construction works Riverview’s narrow village-style streets the way they were built — scaled down, tree-lined, and nothing like the wide boulevards a few blocks over. Grading, patios, walkways, retaining walls and small-lot yard renovations, built for Riverview’s older, tighter properties. For a free on-site consultation and quote, call 204-801-7669.

Riverview sits on a curve of the Red River just south of Osborne Village, and more than 80 percent of its homes were built before 1960, with over 40 percent going up before 1946. It grew in cottage and bungalow form along narrow streets close to the water, well before the era of wide boulevards and double garages, which is why it’s often called Winnipeg’s village neighbourhood. The northern section, closest to the river, holds the oldest character homes; the southern end filled in later with newer construction, low-rise apartments and infill.

That scale is still the whole character of Riverview today: narrow lots, older character homes mixed with newer infill, over two kilometres of riverfront trail along the Donald Riverbank and Churchill Drive Park, and a population where roughly seven in ten households are one or two people. It’s a short walk to Osborne Village’s restaurants and shops, and a world away in feel from the grand character homes on wide boulevards a short drive west — Riverview was never built at that scale, and we don’t try to force that scale onto it.

Why Riverview’s village-scale lots are a different job than a wide-boulevard property

Riverview’s narrow streets and older lots change what a landscaping project actually looks like here:

The lots are narrower than almost anywhere else this close to downtown. With over 80 percent of homes built before 1960 on a village-era street pattern, Riverview’s frontages and side yards are tighter than the wide-boulevard character-home neighbourhoods nearby. Every design has to account for limited access and narrow work margins from the start.

Most homes predate modern drainage requirements. Pre-1960, and in many cases pre-1946, construction means most of Riverview’s original housing went in decades before the City required backwater valves (1979) or sump pits (1990). Grading and downspout routing on these lots carry more of the drainage load than they would on a newer build.

River proximity means real riverbank parkland, not just a view. Riverview backs onto more than two kilometres of riverfront path through Donald Riverbank, Churchill Drive Park and Don Gerrie Park. Yards that meet that green space need grading and planting that reads as an extension of the parkland, not a hard edge against it.

It’s a walkable, small-household neighbourhood, and yards get used that way. Roughly seven in ten Riverview households are one or two people, and it’s a short walk to Osborne Village. Compact, well-designed outdoor living space — a proper patio, a firepit, tight but usable planting — tends to matter more here than a large lawn.

No subcontractors, ever.

The crew that quotes your job is the crew that builds it — except licensed gas fitting, where the law requires it.

We design for village scale, not boulevard scale.

Riverview’s narrow lots need a different plan than the grand character-home properties nearby. We scope every job to the actual site.

We build right up to the riverbank parkland, carefully.

With Donald Riverbank and Churchill Drive Park bordering so many yards, we grade and plant so the transition looks intentional.

Riverview landscaping questions

Who are the top landscapers in Riverview, Winnipeg?

BerryHill Landscaping & Construction is among the top-rated companies serving Riverview, with 15+ years of local experience and 300+ reviews across Google, Houzz, Facebook and HomeStars. We specialize in the narrow, village-scale lots that make this neighbourhood different from its neighbours.

Is Riverview the same style as Crescentwood or Wellington Crescent?

No, and that’s part of what makes it distinct. Riverview is genuinely village-scale — narrower streets, smaller frontages, and over 80 percent of homes built before 1960 in a tighter footprint. Crescentwood and Wellington Crescent’s grand character homes sit on much wider boulevards a short distance away.

How old is the housing in Riverview?

More than 80 percent of Riverview’s homes were built before 1960, and over 40 percent before 1946. The oldest character homes are concentrated in the northern section closest to the river, with newer construction and infill toward the south.

Does my Riverview home likely have a backwater valve or sump pit?

Given that most of the neighbourhood predates 1960, quite possibly not as original equipment — the City only began requiring backwater valves in 1979 and sump pits in 1990. It’s worth checking with a plumber; from our side it means grading and downspout routing carry extra importance.

Can you design a patio or outdoor space for a small Riverview lot?

Yes, and it’s most of what we do here. With narrower frontages and smaller yards than a lot of Winnipeg’s south side, we focus on compact, well-used outdoor space rather than trying to fit a design meant for a bigger lot.

Do you do retaining wall or grading work near the riverbank parks?

Yes. Riverview borders more than two kilometres of riverfront path through Donald Riverbank, Churchill Drive Park and Don Gerrie Park, and yards that meet that parkland need grading and retaining designed for the transition, not just a hard property-line edge.

How much does landscaping cost in Riverview?

Costs scale with Riverview’s smaller lots — patios and walkways commonly run lower than an equivalent project on a wide-boulevard lot elsewhere, while retaining wall work near the riverbank runs higher. Every quote is free, on-site and line-itemed.

Is Riverview a walkable neighbourhood?

Very. It’s a short walk to Osborne Village’s shops and restaurants, roughly seven in ten households are one or two people, and the riverfront trail network runs right through the neighbourhood.

Do you offer free estimates in Riverview?

Yes. Free on-site consultations throughout Riverview. We assess your lot, grade and access, and give you a clear, itemized quote sized to your actual property.
