Elmwood started as the Louise Bridge District after the rail bridge crossed the Red River in 1881, and it didn’t get its current name until Elmwood Cemetery opened in 1902. What made it unusual was how it grew: with no building regulations in place, Elmwood was largely built by amateurs rather than developers, one lot at a time, by the industrial workers and new immigrants who could actually afford to build there. It was common for a modest shack to sit right next to a proper two-storey house, each built to what the owner could manage that year. Residents petitioned to join the City of Winnipeg for services in 1906, and the neighbourhood kept filling in through the 1950s, with East Elmwood being the last section to build out.

That self-built history is still visible in Elmwood’s housing stock today: genuinely century-old homes on lots that were never standardized, added onto and repaired over generations rather than replaced. It’s also still one of Winnipeg’s more affordable neighbourhoods — average household income runs well under the city average, and it stayed a working-class, industrial neighbourhood for most of the 20th century, home to a meat packing plant, a furniture factory and a box factory before de-industrializing after the 1950s. A century of additions means a century of buried surprises. Homes added onto piecemeal since the early 1900s often have old footings, buried debris, or utility runs that were never mapped. We dig carefully and adjust the plan when we find something the drawings didn’t show.
